The youth of Kenosha sent us their scariest stories, and we had a great time reading them! Our winner for grades PreK-2 is Audrey P., a first-grader at St. Joseph Catholic Academy. “I loved some of the language and the voice of the author,” one judge told us. All our judges felt Audrey’s story was funny, with a hint of terror, and that it was easy to picture the scenes she described.

Scary Spaceships
Chapter One: Scary Spaceships
Once upon a time there was this old man. He drank an alien potion when he was on a spaceship. And then he turned into an alien. He was a BAD alien.
One day it was a stormy night. Krrrr krr krrr! it went. And there were children - Jack, Annie, and Vanny - walking right by the alien man’s house, so the alien jumped out of the window…and ate them. The parents ran away because they were too scared to come back to get their children…because they thought it was dangerous. And it was. Indeed. The parents were so scared, they never thought of their kids ever again.
The alien then went into space and the kids floated out of his mouth into a spaceship. Baby brother Vanny booped a button and it made the spaceship fly far away from Earth. They were running and got into the bathroom and locked it. But the alien was using the potty, so they gave him privacy, but then he grabbed them and ate them.
They were swallowed.
Chapter Two: Spaceship Orcs… da da dummm
The kids were scared. Their grownups were long gone. They were in his tummy still. And they could see slightly through the alien’s tummy because he was very skinny. They were watching. The kids’ heartbeats were going BUM bum BUM bum BUM. And the kids heard and saw - slightly saw - from in his belly…ORCS! Spaceship orcs.
The alien hiccuped and the kids were thrown up out of his belly in the air and they hid behind him.
“Huh. My tummy feels weird,” said the alien. He was HUNGRY. They jumped away to hide behind a wall, but one of the orcs said, “Hey. Sir.” (to the alien who was once a man) “I saw some kids.”
Annie, Jack, and Vanny were scared. The orcs had found them. They ran and ran all over the place. The orcs tried to spear them, but the kids grabbed the spears and killed the orcs.
The End.
