“Memory of Shoes” by Ivy L., Poetry Contest Winner (Older Children)

Memory of Shoes

I remember when I was still clean and new
I remember when I was still pink
I remember when I was first handed to you
And your face lit up
I remember when you first started ballet
I remember when you started using me
I remember your first recital
Even though you stood and cried
I remember when you first started competition, shoes now are a little worn out
But my favorite memories yet to come

"Memory of Shoes" was written by Ivy L., a sixth-grader at All Saints Catholic School.

The Older Children poetry division was extremely competitive this year, but judges ultimately settled on this poem as the winning entry.  Nico Moore, current Kenosha Poet Laureate, picked it out as his favorite from the first round of voting, saying, "I appreciated the perspective of the shoes reflecting on past experiences while also looking forward to future experiences."  He noted that it was a "well written and heart felt poem.
