The Kenosha Public Library is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded a grant to educate and celebrate the Dia de Los Muertos holiday. The cultural celebration includes multiple in-person programs and a community ofrenda at Kenosha Public Library- Northside Branch. The entire program series was funded by a CBK grant from the Kenosha Community Foundation.
Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos) is a two day holiday traditionally celebrated in Latin America that reunites the living and dead. Celebrants create ofrendas (offerings) which honor their departed family members and pets that have passed. These altar-like displays are decorated with bright marigold flowers, photos of the departed, and the favorite foods and drinks of the person or pet being honored. The offerings are believed to encourage visits from the land of the dead as the departed souls hear their prayers, smell their foods and join in the celebration.
Upcoming events will include the building of our very first community ofrenda at KPL Northside Branch on Friday, Nov 1. Community members are encouraged to bring traditional offerings such as marigolds, papel picado, or pictures in frames to the community ofrenda. The ofrenda will be on display at our Northside Branch, 1500 27th Ave, Kenosha. The ofrenda opens at 12:00 PM on Friday, Nov 1 and will stay up for public viewing until Nov 9. The community celebration will continue on Saturday, Nov 2 with a live 1:00 PM dance performance by La Perla Tapatía followed by a film screening of Disney/Pixar’s Coco with refreshments.
