“Balance and Breeze” by G.K., Poetry Contest Winner (Teens)

Balance and Breeze

Balancing on two wheels, the world feels small beneath my heels
I hear the leaves crunching beneath me
Cars fly past, I feel free like a bird
Yellow sunlight warms my face
Clouds gradually fade away, like breath on glass
Letting go of the handlebars
Everything else disappears, along with my fears

"Balance and Breeze" was written by G.K., an eighth-grader at All Saints Catholic School.

Our current Racine Poets Laureate, Mary Skillings and Thomas Carr, had especially warm things to say about this poem.  "It's brilliant that the object is not named in the poem," pointed out Skillings, adding that, "instead it is described vividly."  Carr liked "the combination of freedom and danger in the last two lines," as well as the "excellent first line."
