Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

Dating violence is more common than you may think, especially among teens and young adults: 1 in 3 U.S. teens will experience physical, sexual, or emotional abuse from someone they’re in a relationship with before becoming adults. And nearly half (43%) of U.S. college women report experiencing violent or abusive dating behaviors.

Each February, young adults and their loved ones nationwide raise awareness about teen dating violence through Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAM). This annual, month-long effort focuses on advocacy and education to stop dating abuse before it starts. Do you know how to help someone in an abusive relationship? Take the quiz here.

Being a parent of someone in an abusive dating relationship makes a difficult situation even harder. Knowing or even suspecting that your child is being harmed can be both frightening and frustrating. As a parent, you’re a crucial part of helping them develop healthy relationships and providing the support necessary to build their confidence in order to leave the bad ones. You’re also probably afraid for their safety and accustomed to intervening right away when you see them get hurt.

In support of TDVAM Kenosha Public Library is offering: How to Spot Red Flags and Avoid Toxic Relationships

In this one-hour presentation, cover serious subject matter and learn how to spot even the most unnoticeable red flags and what to do when you recognize them. Presented by Kensie Story, co-founder of Underground Advocacy, a survivor, and a Certified Trauma Recovery Coach. This program is designed for adults and teens that are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
